It is simple, NASA does what GW Bush tells it to do.
And GW Bush is destroying the world.

Figures.

Yes, it's 100% true, but then you and others of your kind simply don't
want anything to do with promoting and otherwise sharing the truth.

NASA is an arm of the executive branch of the federal govenment of the
USA. No more or less so than, say, the army. The army doesn't "decide
to invade Iraq" -- everybody would recognize this statement as
ridiculous. And neither does NASA "decide to build a space station" or
"fly shuttles" or any such thing.

Why do people think that these are reasonable claims to make?

NASA does whatever *congress* and *the White House* decide to do. If
the White House decides tomorrow that NASA should build the next
generation toilet brush, then that is what NASA is going to do.

I suspect that if the President told the army to spend all of it's
efforts on building a "next generation toilet brush", a lot of people
would be scared/mad/upset. And rightly so.

The previous administration thought NASA was a great thing to use to
study, monitor, understand and protect our own planet.

This isn't just a change from the previous administration. The 1958
mission statement included "the expansion of human knowledge of the
earth and of phenomena in the atmosphere and space."

One reason to go up is to look down.

But now it's all a big ass lie, isn't it.

Don't worry, the democrats will have at least
one of the branches of Congress after the
midterm. And probably take back the White
House also in three years.

It appears to me Nasa can spend fast enough
to lock in the cev, which is fine by me, but the
moon mission and beyond have to get past the
democratic party.

Fat chance.

The big issues in the upcoming elections should be
immigration, Iraq, gas prices and ....global warming.

All are issues that favor the dems.

Now that I think about it, what we need to do is find
a way to connect Nasa with the global warming and
energy issues. Make Nasa a campaign issue.

It could be plausible to tie Nasa to Iraq as well.
As our energy dependence is a part of our
involvement in the Middle East. Make Nasa
a vehicle for reducing the likelihood of future
wars over oil.

Restoring the mission to planet earth can be
turned into a matter of national security.

Food for thought

That was the general idea. Imagine our surprise finding out that NASA is
not up to the challenge. Rather than accept that challenge, they change
the goal.

What's fine by me is to hurriedly find a replacment
for the shuttle. What worries me most is that if the
moon and mars missions never happen, will the
cev be useless then? Or will it still support the
station and other orbital goals that may come
along?

The consolation prize here is that sometimes one has to
hit bottom before they realize there's a problem.

The political decisions by a few to steer Nasa away
from environmental issues, especially the hot one of
global warming, is a huge political mistake.

Gives the opposition an easy way to undermine
any claim the repubs have for their concern over
global warming. Which will be a central issue
for the next couple of elections.
