Does anyone know of a COTS star pattern identification software?
Obviously, 'lost in space' will also work (might be more expensive,
though).

References to literature/descriptions of relevant algorithms would also
be very useful.

Note: I am looking for a little more detail than "make triangles out of
star centroids in the image, measure the distance between centroids in
the triangle, then compare with a database of same, generated from a
star catalog (correcting for proper motion)."

Thanks!

You might have a look at the WCStools package at
http://tdc-www.harvard.edu/software/wcstools/

In particular, see 'imwcs'. Unfortunately, the current implementation
requires that the rotation angle be known, at least approximately, but
maybe you could adapt the program for your purpose.

http://spiff.rit.edu/match/

Does not require that the rotation angle be known in advance.
Is not user friendly.

The NVO also just released two new "WCSFixer" services using either
an approximate WCS in the header or a position/scale starting guess (no
rotation needed). See the links at the botton of the
NVO homepage at http://us-vo.org
