"A small helicopter opened a new chapter of space exploration this morning
when it lifted off the surface of Mars, marking humankind’s first powered flight on another planet. The 19-inch-tall chopper called Ingenuity kicked up rusty red dust as it hovered about 10 feet off the ground, turned slightly, and slowly touched back down. The flight lasted only about 40 seconds, but it represents one of history's most audacious engineering feats." See: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/techn...et/ar-BB1fOlIm |

Now I think that Ingenuity is very cool. But building a tiny helicopter capable of flying on Mars is not a big engineering feat. Bringing the helicopter to Mars is the real challenge, but the ability to bring stuff on Mars has been demonstrated decades ago. Once again, I think that Ingenuity is very cool and give a kudos to NASA for pulling it off. But the Wright Flyer was a major milestone, Ingenuity is a really cool toy. Alain Fournier |

In article ,
says... What I am more curious about is what would a real plane equivalent to say the Dash-8 be like on Mars. Wingspan, (and thus structures) and engines/propellors or ducted fans. (assuming electric engine here since jet or internal combustion would require liquid O2 as well as fuel). Aircraft on Mars would be extremely difficult, but possible. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_aircraft Jeff -- All opinions posted by me on Usenet News are mine, and mine alone. On Wednesday or thereabouts, Jeff Findley asked ...

On 2021-04-19 12:47, wrote: "A small helicopter opened a new chapter of space exploration this morning when it lifted off the surface of Mars, Has NASA released specs on how far from Perseverance the helicopter can go to remain in radio contact? I don't know. You could try Google. Or does the chopper talk to Earth on its own and can have totally unrelated mission and go totally different places? Ingenuity does not talk directly to Earth. It talks to Perseverance rover which in turn talks to craft currently in orbit around Mars. This information is on their respective Wikipedia pages (grep for communication). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingenuity_(helicopter) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perseverance_(rover) And you should be able to find that information on the JPL site, as well. /dps -- As a colleague once told me about an incoming manager, "He does very well in a suck-up, kick-down culture."
