Default Hilbert Lives On

This article

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...1213085106.htm

notes that the discovery of the Higgs boson makes it unlikely there
will be a fourth generation of quarks.

It ends on the note that we still have to determine the properties of
the Higgs in more detail, and we have to find out why there is more
matter than antimatter.

I would like it if we continue to solve the riddles of nature, but I
can't say that we will solve these riddles - or that we can't live
without solving them. Fermat's Last Theorem tantalized us for a long
time... and the Riemann Conjecture remains unsolved.

Still, the confident note on which the article ends reminds me of a
famous remark by David Hilbert:

Wir müssen wissen. Wir werden wissen.

We must know! We _will_ know!

John Savard
