Default Lasers Reportedly Pointed at Hawaii Planes

The FBI and police are reportedly investigating three incidents in
which powerful laser beams were aimed at commercial planes headed into
Honolulu International Airport over the past two weeks. The FBI said
the incidents were not terrorism related.

On a non-spammy note, some of the Mauna Kea observatories actually use
lasers to create artificial "stars" in the sky that they then "look at"
and use to configure their adaptive optics to provide better seeing for
real targets, I think.

One that I know of (Keck, which I suppose could count as two, actually)
has people whose job it is to stand outside and watch for any aircraft
flying near the mountain, to make sure that they don't zap any with the
laser.

Guess they will have to be closed down now, so some waffle-face
stateside can own a 3mw green laser!
