Cleaning lenses - any recommendations please?
My binocular lenses have a bit of grease on them. Anyone have any good
recommendations for cleaning lenses please? The lens cleaning cloth they came with isn't very good. Thanks a lot, Craven. |

Whip out hanky. Find a clean patch Breathe on lens Wipe with clean hanky I've been using this method for decades and have never had a problem with it not working, or damaging the lens. Also works on spectacles. -- http://thisreallyismyhost.99k.org/31...7411426454.php |

It is probably just about OK on spectacles. That is somewhat unhelpful advice at least for astronomical optics. Jessops sell lens cleaning tissue and isopropanol that is suitable for cleaning grease off binocular and camera lenses. You want minimal pressure and gentle radial linear strokes over the problem area. Try to dry as much of the solvent off the surface with the edge of a second tissue. Commercial cleaning solvents are seldom pure enough to survive a spot test so you don't want to leave any big droplets on it. There is another thread in rec.photo.digital that mentions a US product for lens cleaning that is pure methanol - totally inappropriate for normal use as it is far too aggressive against plastics.
