Default Gyro Failure On ISS

New reports say that one crapped out completely and that the
remaining two are enough to hold the ISS in position, but that one of those
two is starting to look a little "erratic". News report said no problem:
Soyuz' thrusters are the backup plan if that gyro fails.

Nope, the gyro itself (CMG2) is good; it's the power supply (RPC) that
failed. If the RPC is fixed, the CMG should be fine.

That would be CMG3. It's been looking erratic for quite a while now.

Actually Zvezda thrusters.

Why no reports on all this on sci.space.news? Is someone on their holidays?

http://www.latimes.com/la-na-gyro23a...,4825052.story sez,

Mike Suffrendini, NASA's operations integration manager for
the space station, said the problems do not threaten the
safety of either the crew or the spacecraft. Even if another
gyroscope fails, the space agency could control the station
by using the thrusters on an attached Russian module for six
months to a year, he added.

Is that using some/all of the fuel we were discussing in the
recent "reboost" thread?

I'm afraid so.

You do know that singily none of these troubles is a show stopper. But taken
together it might be like multi organ failure in a human, it can kill.

The station is stable today but will it survive to its planned end of life?
