NASA Extends Spacesuit Contract
Al Feinberg Headquarters, Washington July 18, 2003 (Phone: 202/358-4504) John Ira Petty Johnson Space Center, Houston (Phone: 281/483-5111) RELEASE: C03-x NASA EXTENDS SPACESUIT CONTRACT NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC), Houston, will exercise an option to extend the contract with Hamilton Sundstrand Space Systems International, Inc. (HSSSI) of Windsor Locks, Conn., for work on spacesuits used for spacewalks. The "Option 3" on contract NAS 9-97150, modification number 460, is valued at $26 million and is the last of the available annual renewal options. The contract, worth $333 million over six years, was awarded through the competitive procurement process and was effective Oct. 1, 1997. It included a four-year base effort and annual renewal options for an additional three years, potentially extending the period of performance to Sept. 30, 2004. The work includes responsibility for the successful performance of the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU), the U.S. spacesuit used by spacewalkers; program and business management and engineering; design, development, certification, production and enhancement of the EMU and other spacewalking-related hardware; assured EMU availability program; field activities; safety; mission assurance; and reliability and quality assurance programs. If they put it out to bid, they'll do so before it expires. If there's any problem with the bidding process, they can issue an emergency extension. Standard gov't contracting procedure.
