S.C. native proud of releasing Foley e-mails
The Associated Press CHARLESTON - A South Carolina native says his goal in releasing the e-mails that eventually ensnared the Republican Party in an election year scandal was simply to expose the excesses of one Florida congressman. "I absolutely think I did the right thing in making it public," Lane Hudson told The (Charleston) Post and Courier. "It doesn't matter if it's Republican or Democrat, gay or straight, it's inappropriate behavior." Hudson, a 29-year-old gay Democratic activist who went to high school in Myrtle Beach, said having the Democrats take control of both houses of Congress also is a reward. Hudson said he knew firsthand of Foley's inappropriate behavior because the congressman hit on him 11 years ago in a Washington, D.C., bar. Foley quit Congress after sexually explicit computer messages he had sent to teenage pages were revealed. Hudson, who triggered the story in September when he posted some of those e-mails on the Internet, won't say how he got the e-mails but that they weren't hard to get. The revelations cost Hudson his job. He was fired from the gay rights group Human Rights Campaign after bloggers traced his e-mail postings to his use of the group's equipment. |
