Default Japan orbits HTV cargo ship

The maiden launch of the Japanese HTV cargo ship has successfully placed
it into orbit as of a few minutes ago.
The spacecraft is scheduled to arrive at the ISS next Thursday:
http://spaceflightnow.com/h2b/htv1/0...iew/index.html
Not described in that article is another revolutionary ability that the
HTV is rumored to posses, that being to deploy both arm and legs - as
well as a laser cannon and 30-foot Katana sword - to transform itself
into the "Ajax Guardian" configuration and protect the ISS from any
threat posed by alien forces, such as The Mysterians or Comet Empire, if
the need arises.
When asked about those rumored abilities, a representative from JAXA
stated: "There is no truth to such foolish stories...it's actually a
plasma cannon, and the sword is far more like a Ninjato than Katana in
design, as befits its use in the eternal night of space."
JAXA has as yet to release any data on a far larger follow-on spacecraft
design that they refer to as "SDF-1". ;-)

Cool. I wish them success.

Here is the, very well done, Press Kit:

I like the picture on the first page and the cut-away picture on page 1-4.

In every school picture there is someone who has to make a funny face
or gesture or what not. I guess the impulse is not limited to school
children. look closely at the image on the first page - everyone there
is standing calmly, hands clasped in front/back or at their sides,
save the one person at the back who is either channeling Tricky Dick
Nixon entering his departure helicopter, shouting Banzai, or trying to
pretend s/he is holding-up the entire stage.

Jeeze, if you look at the first photo of that PDF, it actually does look
like it has some sort of big robotic face mounted on the side, ready to
swing into position. :-D

I assume that's the team leader saluting the team that is assembled in
front of him.
He's probably yelling something like: "All hail Ajax Guardian! Protector
of the purity of the dewy-eyed flowers of our nation against the
depredations of The Mysterians!"
To which the team will respond: "May The Mysterians melt away like so
many flakes of snow in his hot plasma fire! May his mighty sword strike
down those who would dare try to defile our daughters, like so many
flies gathering too lustily around purest honey!"
Then they will all dance.
They generally do something along these lines on introducing a new model
of car also, with "The South Koreans" replacing "The Mysterians", and
"company stock options" replacing "dewy-eyed flowers". ;-)

Both Europe and Japan see their Transfer Vehicles as a roadmap towards
a manned space program. Europe has already announced the ARV (Advanced
Reentry Vehicle; an oxymoron since there's nothing advanced about a
reentry vehicle) and the Japanse will decide depending on the results
of the HTV.

I wish we had as much luck with our space projects as the EU and Japan
seem to have had with ATV and HTV; The closet thing we have to that is
COTS, and it's not built in prototype form by a long way yet, and will
ride a booster that hasn't even been tested yet.

Seeing it as a roadmap and getting the funding to do it are two very
different things. Both Europe's and Japan's manned spacecraft won't be
ready (if they magically got funding from their largely indifferent
governments) until 2020 or so, about when ISS will be retired.

We don't need ATV or HTV, we have Shuttle, which is superior to both.
The three systems, along with Soyuz and Progress, compliment each
other very well.

"Closet"? OMG, COTS is another example of the Creeping Gay Agenda!
I'd write more, but it's time for a email to Glenn Beck.
This will make him cry like a manly baby when he realizes the full
ramifications of it. :-D
