I hope and pray I never die without witnessing a solar eclipse.

I have no idea how I might engineer this feat considering cost, time, place
and CIRCUMSTANCE
but even if I can still see with unaided eye and a good level of clarity, I
hope my years will be with me.

How old/young are you? There are two major US eclipses coming up (I assume
you live in the US): 2017 and 2024.

Really? 2017 one will do just fine but the 2024 one will be a gift if my
eyes are still
good enough. But I should be able to see both. This is great news.

Thanks

But perhaps you should travel more. Starting in 1998 a friend of mine
made it a point to travel to see every solar eclipse .. and to see the
Venus transit from the Vatican observatory (Castel Gondolfo, I believe).

And good that he did: He passed away recently at an age somewhat short
of 50.

After the one on Wednesday, the next total eclipse
will be visible from (among other places) northern
Canada, in 2008. You don't have to wait until 2017.
Look at the maps. Be creative.

The 2024 eclipse is the same Saros as the one on
Wednesday (my first!), and the same Saros as the
1970 U.S. east coast eclipse (3 * 18 = 54 = 1 Exeligmos).
The 2017 eclipse is the same Saros as the 1999
eclipse in Europe. It will be a deep partial eclipse
from here in Vancouver, but will be total in northern
Oregon.

I know people who flew over Antarctica for the November
2003 eclipse. Now *that's* dedication! They also got
a few seconds more totality by chasing the Moon's
shadow.

I must admit I was tempted...

The 2017 one starts out, as Laura said, in Oregon, and goes through southern
Idaho, Wyoming, Nebrasky... and I think exits through South Carolina. That's
of the same Saros cycle (third since) as the one in 1963 (I went - but
clouded out in Maine). The path continues to drop south and totality is
lasting longer. It's in the 3rd week of August, so prepare accordingly. ;-)

I'm off to Turkey on tuesday. Can't wait!
I admit flying from the UK is a little easier than from the USA, but some
of you guys need to try travelling outside the States sometimes :-)

The way the world is right now, anyone from the USA and saying so is in
danger. Besides, I got all my overseas sightseeing done while I was in the
Army.

I'm on my way tonight, change planes at Heathrow Sunday
afternoon, stay overnight in Istanbul, catch a flight to Antalya
Monday morning. My flight arrives in Istanbul at 2305 local
time (yawn), so I lined up my visa ahead of time through the
embassy in Ottawa.

I can't wait either.

If I didn't want to travel I'd have to wait until 3 August 2771
for an eclipse right here in Vancouver. There are some
near-misses in the interim (e.g. 14 June 2151), plus several
annular eclipses (e.g. 3 July 2084). That would be just before
my 123rd birthday. I seriously doubt I'll still be around by then. :-)

I think you're being a little paranoid Dennis.
For the most part Americans are welcome just about anywhere in the world.
Just don't tell them you voted for Bush :-)
