Clearly color doesn't matter. Just consider the light one sees from the night sky itself!

But that's the light we want to see, and most of it is NOT in the deep red end of the spectrum. Our rods can't see that light, but our cones can.

OTOH, red goggles make a dramatic impact as an aid in dark adaptation while in a (bright) white-light environment. You even see them used by submariners (actors) in old WWII movies prior to surfacing at night. Therein may lie a prime reason that red has become the dominate color for astronomical eyes.

I did an experiment of sorts some years ago wherein I dark adapted in a pitch black room for about a half hour. The only light visible was coming from a very small gap below the door, which also illuminated the lower part of the walls.

Both eyes were equally adapted. I closed and covered one eye, switched on my filtered light, and looked -directly- into it with the other eye for many seconds.

I switched the light off and then resumed looking around at the dimly lit room. After a few seconds the "lit-up" eye re-dilated and both eyes were still equally adapted.

I can read printed star charts in otherwise pitch dark places with that light.

YMMV.

When I were a lad... we couldn't afford observing lights. So we just stood outside and stared at the night sky until everything went grey. Then we went back down the mines to work all day [for no pay] without any lights. Those were the [monochrome] days! That was before they invented colour, of course

You'd probably recognise this strange, black and white world. It looks and sounds just like it does in your posts. Early onset, colour impoverishment is an awful disease of the mind. Add in your lack of human empathy and you must be the life and soul of any party. Particularly a Tea and shooting party. Bottoms up, old chap!

Yessum! Y'all miss the obvious references to prolonged, dark adaptation and rapidly changing, economic progress under a wage-slave-free society with universal education, Miss Snelly? Whoops! Silly me: Wrong continent! Wrong time. May-be, entirely the wrong world! Okay... Beam me up, Scotty! spit
