Default VIRUS WARNING Stuf 4 post on comet!

The message " 19th Cent. Image of Comet Tearing Earth Apart"
sent by Stuf 4 at 3:53 AM on November 18th contains a link to a site
about a moon history book by a Lewis Manson...DO NOT USE THAT LINK!
The site will download the W32.Nimda.A@mm(html) virus to your computer;
either when it is initially accessed, or when you attempt to navigate
the site.
This post may not even have been sent by Stuf 4, as I have him
killfiled- yet this post showed up on my sci.space.history newsgroup
despite that fact.
I'm going to try to use the clock reset trick to get this to appear
before the comet posting.

I suspect it's the server itself infected, not something inherent in the link.
I mean it's running IIS4, sheesh.

It rode in as a parasite on one of the illustrations on the homepage-
actually this is the first time I ever ran into a virus on the web that
actually downloaded onto my computer. For the curious, the file it was
in was named F3E3BED9d01.

I'm guessing your antivirus caught it after it was d/l'ed. I've been to the
page in question in several different versions of windows and gotten nothing.
Might be time to patch up, Pat. OS & web browser, at the least.

I'm up-to-date in Windows 98, and have Professional Norton Antivirus
installed, with real-time monitoring- Norton caught it within around a
minute after it came down, and stated it was in that specific file- I
believe the file was the site's homepage; as I looked at the cleaned
file in Wordpad, and it came from that site (it referred to Origin of
the Moon in regards to the illustration from the file); I deleted the
file after looking at it in Wordpad, so I can't give specific details on
it. (I am _not_ going back to that site to see if it will download
again.) I'll send you info on my browser via private reply.

It comes with every post you make. :-P Seriously, switching to the newest
version of Mozilla wouldn't be a shock at all. I wouldn't even bother with
Netscape 7.1, as Mozilla 1.5 is newer and they're essentially the same
software.

That's essentially the main difference. They're compiled from the same source
code, except "Netscape" has now been discontinued. Netscape 7.1==Mozilla 1.4.
Netscape 7.0 is even older, in fact EH GADS! NS 7.0==Mozilla 1.0. That's
positively ancient.

Okay, rub it in that I'm a stuck-in-the-mud old fart. :-)

True. But why do I get the feeling the Firewomen surf the net with a fire
breathing lizard, and not its neutered cousin? I certainly wouldn't want to
let them catch me riding around with exploitable holes either...
