May be, but I can trust my VHS not to spy on me and push content I
didn't ask to be recorded, or forward my preferences on to marketing
companies. Plus, being a removable tape medium, VHS gives me greater
control over the exercise of my fair-use rights.

All true. As far as pushing content, TiVo does that - it records about
20 minutes worth of stuff per week that you'll never even see listed if
you don't click on it specifically. You can also tell it to NOT record
stuff you don't tell it to. The data TiVo sells to marketers is not
individually-identifiable. And you can export shows to anything that
you can connect to an RCA jack or S-video connection.

Try it; you'll like it. :-)
