Hardin DSH8 problem
I know there are alot of people with Hardin DSHs in this group. I just got
the DSH8 (and I have a bit of experience with the Orion Starblast-which I bought for myself (not my kids!) a few months ago, and when I saw the price of the DSH8s I decided to upgrade) and I am having a problem with the base. The bolt that holds the two round pieces at the bottom keeps coming lose. The other night the whole thing dropped out as I was moving it, the piece with the feet on it fell to the ground. I put it back together but I've noticed that it comes lose even if I just give the thing a spin or two. Any ideas on how to fix this? Anyone else have this problem? Thanks Margaret |

Is there enough room on the bolt behind the nut which keeps unscrewing to place a second nut? Tighten them into each other and see if that helps. Or, and maybe more simple, remove the guilty nut and pour some white glue inside of it so that it coats the threads. Wait until the glue dries and then thread the nut back on the bolt. You'll have to force it to get it started but it should fit nice and tightly and hold once in position. Or, if you know you will never have any need to remove the ground plate from the bottom of the rocker box (that's the name of the two "round pieces" you refer to), you could use some type of lock-tight product available from a hardware store. I wouldn't recommend this option however, since it stops you from being able to remove the nut or adjust the tension which it applies to the assembly. Hope this helps. -- Martin Looking for an additional site on which to file your observation reports? Planets, stars, DSOs, satellites. . .whatever you've observed, feel free to report on at: Formal or informal. . .any format welcomed! |

Get a nut with the nlyon insert to replace the one you have. It also
acts as a lockwasher. That should do the trick for you. On Sun, 31 Aug 2003 21:20:32 GMT, "margaret" wrote: I know there are alot of people with Hardin DSHs in this group. Get a nut with the nlyon insert to replace the one you have. It also
acts as a lockwasher. That should do the trick for you. Another technique is to apply a drop of "Crazy Glue" on the threads once you have gotten it properly adjusted. Put it right where the nut and threads meet. It is a "poor man's " Loctite and works well but can be easily freed up if need be. jon |

Poor man's Loctite?! Isn't Loctite cheaper than crazy glue, or at
least pocket change for either one? My advice is don't mess around with crazy glue. It can end up drying and locking the bolt before you have a chance to tighten it. Do it right. Use blue Loctite. You'll find it at any hardware or automotive supply store. It will lock the nut in place and you can loosen it later. Before you do that you might want to call Hardin and find out what is wrong. It doesn't sound right. (Jon Isaacs) wrote in message ... Get a nut with the nlyon insert to replace the one you have. It also acts as a lockwasher. That should do the trick for you. Before you do that you might want to call Hardin and find out
what is wrong. What is wrong? There is nothing wrong. It is exactly as it should be. It's a budget dobsonian. They frequently require tweaking. That goes with the territory. john |
