He's been saying that for a while, I believe. |

And to dismiss the possiility shows a fundamental ignorance of the power of future weaponry (particularly biological and nanotechnological). So you don't think there are enough nuclear weapons in existence to destroy all human life? Nobody with any sense thinks that. Well, I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility that all the nuclear weapons in existence, bent to one will and one plan for total genocide, *might* suffice for that purpose, but I'd tend to bet against even that and it would take a fairly substantial ammount of pointless analysis to indicate otherwise. I haven't bothered, and I don't know of anyone who has. The nuclear weapons actually in existence, are divided amongst half a dozen or so competing powers with competing plans and interests, none of them involving total genocide. -- *John Schilling * "Anything worth doing, * *Member:AIAA,NRA,ACLU,SAS,LP * is worth doing for money" * *Chief Scientist & General Partner * -13th Rule of Acquisition * *White Elephant Research, LLC * "There is no substitute * * for success" * *661-718-0955 or 661-275-6795 * -58th Rule of Acquisition * |

I've been saying it for years and I agree with him. We are moving altogether too damn slow for my liking. Let these ignorant religious fools parish with the next extinction. They are a total waste anyway. War mongering superstitious morons that they are. -- Two ways to improve your life. 1. Turn off the TV. 2. Throw it out the window. Vlad the Impaler |

... Of course that's a paranoid fantasy. But that is still probably what subconsciously frightens many people about space settlement. They know that *they* and *their descendants* will be stuck on Earth, and thus they fear that a human settlement on Mars will end up including not just highly qualified astronauts, but the wealthy and powerful - who will then have an opportunity to forget about them, and their, and Earth's, problems. What does Hawking know about biology? If we can't move SIX BILLION people off the earth then colonies are not about survival of the species. They're about the survival of a few elite examples of the species. All of us know the properties of Darwinian evolution. The adaptability, resilience and self-tuning. That what life does first, best and every chance it gets is to find the optimum solution all by itself. To assume we're likely to destroy ourselves or our biosphere to the point of extinction shows a fundamental ignorance of the properties of life. And if Nature should happen to take our little slice of heaven from us, then those in colonies will be literally left alone in hell. What's the point? Jonathan s |
