West Yorks Newbie
Hi all
I have been bought a Tasco Luminova 4011467 as a birthday present. I found setting the thing up quite a challenge and am not sure about a few things. 1) What is a Barlow lens ? 2) Do I need to set the telescope with my correct longitude ? 3) Is this a good beginner telescope ? 4) Are there any good Astronomy clubs in west Yorks ? I hope all that didnt sound too foolish and I look forward to gaining much more insight from using this newsgroup Cheers Paul. |

We're an amateur group in Todmorden, if that helps, and we're open every evening over National Astronomy week. We're also open every Saturday evening, so bring it over and we'll try and help, Steve -- Steve Taylor Technical Director Astronomy Centre http://www.astronomycentre.org.uk |

1) What is a Barlow lens ? http://astunit.com/tutorials/barlow.htm 2) Do I need to set the telescope with my correct longitude ? If it has an equatorial mount, then: "Yes, if you want to use it equatorially." See: http://astunit.com/tutorials/polar.htm 3) Is this a good beginner telescope ? Make up your own mind about this: http://astunit.com/tutorials/evaluating.htm and http://astunit.com/tutorials/firstscope.htm 4) Are there any good Astronomy clubs in west Yorks ? Steve Taylor has already given you what is probably the best answer to this. If I may add my £0.02, I was up there at Easter and was made to feel very welcome indeed -- I would recommend it to anyone looking for a friendly and knowledgeable society.
