The moon is tidally coupled to the Earth's own rotation, which means that its orbital and rotational motions are essentially equal. The moon orbiting the Earth is no different than a car circling a traffic roundabout where one side of the car always faces the roundabout while the other side faces away . Sure, that is exactly right. What about the guy sitting in the passenger seat of that car, who is looking out his side window? What does he see? Why, he sees everything outside of the traffic circle go around and around, all 360 degrees of it! He looks in every direction, North, East. South and West, with each revolution round that traffic circle. He appears to be... wait for it... ROTATING! Just keep shrinking the radius of that traffic circle until it is very, very small... and come back and tell us what you have. Can you do this, Gerald? Congratulations! You have shown us, without a shadow of a doubt, that the moon rotates once for each and every revolution it makes around the Earth! |

The theory of gravity

The days of demonstrating where Newton misread Kepler's Somnium are long since gone and belong to a different time in my life. I realize that they tried once before in the mid 19th century to remove a diseased conclusion but were not successful so here we are with the upcoming eclipse where the reflected light of our planet lights up the same face of the moon we see at full moon - https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/000...endler_big.jpg https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/f...ght_corona.jpg The second image has a magnification facility which brings the moon's surface features into sharper focus. The difference between the first and second image is one is due to direct sunlight reaching the moon and the second the rare eclipse observation of the reflected light of the Earth on the moon. This and this alone draw attention to the orbital traits of the moon in their full manifestation and they are supposed to delight the 21st century observer who has access to them. A person or a nation who cannot move on from a casual and silly late 17th century conclusion cannot be an independent person or nation but a slave to a manufactured history. |
