Node2 installation procedures
When they installed PMA1/NODE1/PMA2 to Zarya, they used the arm to dock
the node/PMA combo onto the ODS, and then used the shuttle's arm to grapple Zarya and bring it to PMA1 to dock/berth it if I remember correctly. In the case of node2, could they not have docked to PMA2, let the station pickup node2 from cargo bay, then unberthed PMA2 from destiny (making shuttle free floating), then station arm could have berthed node2 to destiny, and then the station could have used its arm to bring itself to berth PMA2 to node2 ? This way, the whole physical location/installation would have been done in one shot. Or was it considered that the undocking and redocking would have consumed too much fuel ? Right now, the plan is to put node2 onto node1, and let the station folks handle the moving of pma2 to node2 and then move node2/pma2 to destiny well after the shuttle has left.) But this will require they setup minimal umbilicals to keep node2 alive while it is berthed to node1. I think mid november is when they plan to move node2 into its proper berthing location forward of destiny. |
