Composer Alexander Courage also died this week. Bad week for vintage Star
Trek.

I'll miss Ernst Stuhlinger...but I'll _really_ miss Alexander Courage -
that was _great_ music for the sci-fi television series he wrote the
theme music for.
I'll bet that anyone who saw these shows as a kid could do an impeccable
job of humming them from memory right now:
"Star Trek".
"Lost In Space".
"Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea".
Particularly that last one...incorporating the sonar pings into the
theme music was pure genius.
Okay, "Jurassic Park" didn't exactly suck either. :-)
Anyone wants to take this thread into who your favorite science
fiction/fantasy movie soundtrack writer is, and why...I'll pick Bernard
Herrmann as mine, hands-down.
He did some mighty great stuff in other movies, but no one succeeded in
bettering the majesty and almost mystical aspects of the music he wrote
for "Journey To The Center Of The Earth".
That was perfect.
That movie wouldn't have been 1/4 of what it was without his input.
Imagine "The Day The Earth Stood Still" or "Jason And The Argonauts"
without the Herrmann touch.
They'd be minor at best....nowadays, they are all-time classics.

The use of the theramin makes "The Day the Earth Stood Still". It seems to
be the one continuous element in the Dr Who themes as well.

....Sandy Courage had one other claim to immortality that very few
people were aware of until recently. You know the sound the TOS "E"
made when it zoomed by at warp speed? That "Swishing" sound? That was
Sandy making "shhhhhhwooop!" sounds into a cassette tape recorder back
in early 1965.
