One of those little astronomy moments
I have a pair of cordless headphones. I can pipe just about anything
into them through my stereo system, including sound from my computer. At about the time JPL was commanding the Spirit rover to deploy it's high gain antenna last night I piped the NASA TV audio to the headphones and went out back. With the busy sounds of mission control in my ears I stood there gazing at Mars, and even without the aid of a telescope I was struck by something: Mars had never before seemed so close. By the way, the landing site is marked on this map as MER1 (to the right). Gusev crater is located south of Cerberus at about 175E, 15S.
