Default Nikon D100 for astrophotography

All,

Funny how life presents one with opportunities. I'm driving to work this
morning, wishing I could find an affordable DSLR to start
astrophotography. A friend just contacted me and wants to sell me a
barely used Nikon D100 for $400.

D100's were the first (or one of the first) serious DSLRs. I know for
real-world photography it's an incredible camera, but does anyone have
experience using it in astrophotography?

I had planned on starting this all next year and was leaning toward
Canon since an inordinate amount of amateurs seem to prefer it over
Nikon. But since I already have a N80 and a few Nikon lenses anyway, the
$400 price tag is impossible to pass up.

And actually, I still won't have the ability to image for quite some
time, since my only scope is a 10" dob. My wife is going to strangle me
for this...

A followup to my own post -- after some searching, it looks like the
D100 is very noisy at long exposures. While the D100 is a great camera,
many newer models like the D70 or a comparable Canon may have lower
noise levels. Hmmm...

Someone who has a D100 posted a similar comment on the d70astro yahoo
group, but he's doing OK By stacking shorter images.

In any event, even with your dob, as long as it'll focus, you'll do fine
for Moon shots.
