Space craft operating system programming language?
The recent post regarding os say it is Flight Linux. Are the
spacecraft systems computer programs written in C? Christopher +++++++++++++++++++++++++ "Kites rise highest against the wind - not with it." Winston Churchill |

Most spacecraft computers were essentially embedded systems with Real-Time requirements, so tended to have custom OS's, hence custom programming at the next layer. The trend is away from that. (BTW, there is a minor corollary in that most of the CPU's were custom, so anything running on them also were custom designed. It is much, much easier to just program in assembler than design a computer language to translate to assembly). |

Can't answer for what's done in that particular project -- although with Linux involved, it would be surprising if it wasn't using C -- but C is certainly quite a common choice for spacecraft software. -- MOST launched 30 June; first light, 29 July; 5arcsec | Henry Spencer pointing, 10 Sept; first science, early Oct; all well. | |
