MESSENGER s systems performed flawlessly as the spacecraft swooped around Earth, coming to a closest approach point of about 1,458 miles (2,347 kilometers) over central Mongolia at 3:13 p.m. EDT. Although the highest ranked guy in Japanese sumo is Mongolian, I don't think many of them are so tall that they really needed to duck Dale 15 hour lag on my main newserver now. The alternate server is completely dead. Oh well, at least NASA TV is still live. They sure have this EVA stuff down to a well-choreographed act. Seems like it's improved a lot since they started ISS assembly. That must be worth something, in ISS's defense... |

Only when presented with something new and unique, like the gap filler problem. You'd better believe they trained for the specific tasks that were planned ahead of time (e.g. the CMG replacement procedures). Note that shuttle EVA's tend to be more planned because they're done within days of launch. On Mir or ISS, problems can crop up that require an EVA to fix. It's these sorts of EVA's that you may not be able to plan out and train for in great detail. Jeff -- Remove icky phrase from email address to get a valid address. |
