Ablative Panels for reusable Space Capsule
Assuming a reusable space casule was being designed today, say as the
CTV for the ISS. In order to make the capsule reusable, the heatshield would be bolted on, easily removed after reentry. The sides of the capsule would have thinner bolt on plates of the same ablative material. My question is: What kinds of ablative material do we have now that could be used on a modern day capsule, using the above scenario? Would the ablative plates on the sides of the capsule require some kind of protection from both liftoff and the tempature extremes of LEO (Apollo had aluminized Mylar on the sides)? |
