Cassini's Iapetus flyby
Some fascinating pictures coming back from the Cassini probe's recent flyby
of Saturn's moon Iapetus. http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/home/index.cfm Anyone know any groups where this sort of thing is discussed? uk.sci.astronomy seems to be more for people interested in bodies observed from the earth's surface. |

Cassini's Iapetus flyby
In uk.sci.astronomy message
om, Thu, 13 Sep 2007 13:24:56, MichaelJP posted: Some fascinating pictures coming back from the Cassini probe's recent flyby of Saturn's moon Iapetus. http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/home/index.cfm There is a foolish bug behind that page (I've twice told JPL) which will not be observable from the UK - or at least not from computers where local time is GMT at the end of the year. But AA et al might observe it - observe the countdown, between local and UTC New Year. Some Americans should see it in daylight! And those in JP, AU, NZ, etc. The picture on the right looks to me like a thin and battered sheet of white, corroded or battered and therefore showing black perforations. Anyone know any groups where this sort of thing is discussed? sci.astro, sci.astro.amateur, sci.space.* ; dominated by the USA except pictorially where (IIRC) AA reigns supreme if not entirely unchallenged. uk.sci.astronomy seems to be more for people interested in bodies observed from the earth's surface. Dominantly but not exclusively. Anyway, Iapetus is a body observed from the Earth's surface, and Cassini just provides a closer view. -- (c) John Stockton, Surrey, UK.
