NYC EVENTS FOR MARCH 2007
--------------------------
John Pazmino
NYSkies

[part 1 of 2 parts]0

The following astronomy activities in the commuting ring enclosing
New York City are operated by various organizations. A few cultural
items of special importance to City astronomers may be included.
Altho NYC Events confirms the listed items, they are subject to
change by their sponsors. Check with their contacts. Let the sponsor
of an event you attend know that you learned of its event thru NYC
Events.
You may ask for the next NYC Events thru the NYSkies email
address, above, if you're not yet in the forum.
For events which missed NYC Events, check the NYSkies Yahoogroup
forum. Join NYSkies by sending email to 'nysky-subscribe @
yahoogroups.com'.
Hours from March 1 thru 10 are Eastern Standard Time. From March
11 to 31 they are Eastern Daylight Savings Time. Recall that daylight
savings time in 2007 inaugurates its new extended duration, from the
2nd Sunday of march thru the 1st Sunday of November.

Lunar eclipse and occultation
---------------------------
On the evening of match 3rd is a total lunar eclipse. MNoon rises
in umbra quite at sunset. You need a clear view to the east horizon. A
couple astronomy centers set up lunar eclipse watchs, but please ask
at your own local one for last minute arrangements.
During totailty the 5th magnitude star 59 leonis is occulted, an
uncommon feature of lunar eclipses. The ingress is in bright twilight;
egress, at night. The overall eclipse can be enjoyed with binoculars
but the occultation requires at least a small telescope.

General News
----------
There are many items this month about evolution its relation to a
god. These are important themes for astronomers, both home and campus,
in the ongoing contention between education based on objective science
and that based on belief or faith.
I include the exhibit 'Bodies' at South Street Seaport. It opened
on 19 November 2006 for a short run. It was extended several times to
the point that now it's running thru May 31st. I left it out because
it was a mite and a meter beyond astronomy and space.
In January and February 2007 many readers urged me to see it. OK,
it still has little to do with space and astronomy but it IS one hell
of a fascinating show. Just don't figure to combine it with a picnic
lunch on the Seaport pier or a noon lunch sail in the harbor.
In brief, it is the remains of about 25 real humans, some intact,
others dissected apart. Their organs and nerves and vessels are laid
out to show how the various body systems work. They look live from a
special acrylic fluid that displaced the water and moisture in the
tissue.
I do caution that this is NOT for young children -- even tho the
Seaport has a children's admission -- or weak stomachs!! You ARE
inspecting items once functioning within living people who, ahem, gave
their lives for science.
Princeton University shuffled its astronomy lectures, dropping the
Tuesday sessions at 16:15. Replacing them, at about the same academic
level, are those of the Institute for Advanced Studies, at 11:00.
The New York City and Long Island chapters of National Space
Society are also known as New York Space Society and Long Island Space
Society. These names endure from the time before the clubs became NSS
chapters. You may see them under either the legacy or chapter names in
their litterature.
Welcome back, Urban Park Rangers! There is a detailed roster of
events on their website, but under a new title and in a deep page.
With it in hand I include here a selection of activities pertinent to
home astronomy.

Event news
--------
The NYSkies Seminar on February 1st hosted NYSkier Claudio Veliz
on 'Observatory design on steroids'. He showed a concept he's working
on for the Adirondack Public Observatory near Tupper Lake NY. His
design helps remove interior heat by the Sun at day and by crowds of
visitors at night.
Several NYSkiers took in a private preview opening of the new
Spitzer Hall of Human Origins at American Museum of Natural History on
February 8th. In addition to refreshments and the walkthru of the new
gallery, we were treated to narrated tours to three of the Museum's
laboratories. The hall opened for the public on the 10th as part of
the features of a general admission.
Starting on February 10th and running all thru March, the IRT
Flushing line suspends service between Times Sq and 74 St-Broadway
on weekends. Much of the cause is fitting the line for robotrain, like
the BMT Canarsie line. You better figure to use IND 53 St, BMT 60 St,
IND 63 St, LIRR, shuttle bus, or interboro bus for travel between
Manhattan and Queens.
NYSkiers and NSSers attended a private preview of the space-theme
movie 'Astronaut farmer' on Saturday 10 February at the Loew's cinema
on 34th St, near 9th Av. Following the show, several of us took brunch
at the Starlight diner, also on 34th St.
The film opened on February 23 at various cinemas in the City. By
Warner Brothers, it's about a former NASA engineer, now a farmer, who
builds his own Atlas-Mercury spaceship and then rides in it for
several Earth orbits.
NYSkiers flowed thru the Greenwich Village Antiquarian bookfair on
February 23-25 at Public School #3. They scooped up several astronomy
items, including many original reports from the turn of the 19th
century by William Herschel and a surprisingly new book, from the
early 21st century, on constellation study.
While there are no bookfiars in the City in March, nearby towns
offer a couple within easy reach by train or bus.
Not an 'event' as such, there is a rumble at American Museum of
Natural History. It started last fall but few observers caught on. By
late January the news was in the public eye. It seems that Dr Neil
Tyson is stepping out of the Hayden Planetarium for a year or two, but
he keeps his title and office there. He's working with science media on
