General News
----------
The website for Westchester Amateur Astronomers revived in January
2007. same address. In mid January the website for United Astronomy
Clubs of New Jersey suffered an outage. It returned a 'forbidden
access' error. By month's end it was back in operation.
There are numerous updates for contacts. Please look at those you
are fixing to use. Don't assume they're the same from previous months.
With a surge in new readers of NYC Events, many not familiar with
ersatz NYSkies geography, I now note the state abbreves against the
corresponding districts in the 'Index of Events' section.
Cold Spring harbor Lab leaves NYC Events for having too few
routine events for our readers. Of course, when it does offer an
interesting activity, I will include it as a special item.
Goddard Institute for Space Studies reminds that it can not
receive walkin attendees for its lectures. Please contact GISS on the
day before the session to be entered on the admittance list. Also, be
sure to have GI photo ID, like a driver's licence, current valid US
passport, federal employee badge.
There are many items this month about evolution its relation to a
god. These are important themes for astronomers, both home and campus,
in the ongoing contention between education based on objective science
and that based on belief or faith.
I had to let go of the NYC Urban Park Rangers this month. Its
website went thru alterations that now omits too many of the seven
W's. While they can be recovered thru other parts of the website, it
was too fiddly and frittering. Such degraded promotion hurts me
because the Urban Park Rangers do run very warmly appreciated cultural
cultural events, plus several astronomy ones! I'll work with the
Rangers for possibly rearranging their event webpages.
The New York City and Long Island chapters of National Space
Society are also known as New York Space Society and Long Island Space
Society. These names endore from the time before the clubs became NSS
chapters. You may see them under either the legacy or chapter names in
their litterature.
I combined the entries for IRT and Lower Manhattan subway work
into one 'Lwr Manh-Bklyn DT' entry. The reconstruction on transit

facilities by YE2006 got so intertwined that a disturbance on one
line creates havoc on many others. In general, expect travel to or thru
Brooklyn Downtown and Lower Manhattan to be disrupted every weekend.

Event news
--------
Please remember that events at the New York Academy of Sciences
convene at its new offices in 7 World Trade Center. The old home on 63
St and 5 Av was sold off.
The NYC chapter of NSS, by a late change in early January, had its
January meeting on the 20th, not the 6th. The club sent out a notice,
passed along to the NYSkies Yahoogroup forum.
The NYSkies Seminar on January 4th was Happy Perihelion Day. No
special feature, like banners or balloons, but an extra ample
selection of refreshments. The session on the 18th covered cosmology
and evolution with a full attendance under threat of snow later that
night. It did snow after midnight with shallow accumulation that
sublimed by mid morning on the 19th.
Lower Manhattan was evacuated on 2007 January 23-25 because of a
lethal virus that wiped out the human race. Only one person survived.
OK, this was really a shoot for new sci-fi movie 'I am legend'. The
scenes of mass exodus from Manhattan over Brooklyn Bridge and FDR
Drive were filmed in South Street Seaport and Brooklyn Bridge area.
The City's first of annual bookfairs ran on January 26-27 at the
69th Regiment Armory, Lexington Av and 25-26 St. Announced in early
January, it was attended by several NYSkiers. who feasted on its many
astronomy books. The next major bookfair is the Greenwich Village
fair. Long Island gets its first bookfair of the year on February 3rd.
Columbia University Observatory has TWO sessions in February! The
one on February 2nd is a postponement from January. That on February
23rd is the regular scheduled session.
A new space-theme movie 'Astronaut farmer' opens on February 23 at
various cinemas in the City. By Warner Brothers, it's about a former
NASA engineer, now a farmer, who builds his own spaceship.
The NYSkies Seminar on February 1st hosts NYSkier Claudio Veliz on
'Observatory design on steroids'. He discusses the considerations,
traditional and newly emerging ones, in planning an observatory
structure.

Sky News
------
The NYSkies region saw about the warmest ever December and it
looked like it would see a very warm January. January did start off
with spring temperature in the 20Cs. But!, as if to 'get things
right', the air froze up in the last week of the month. Temperatures
fell to the -10 to -15C!! Despite this, the month saw essentially no
snowfall. It did flurry a bit on the 9th with no accumulation.
Dustings of snow fell on several days there after but with no enduring
ground cover. Thus, January 2007 scored the latest snowfall on record,
breaking the old one for 4 January 1878.
Generally cloudy, yet mild and calm, weather hampered routine
stargazing in early January. By mid month, we had runs of sparkling
clear skies. But, alas, the weather shifted from abnormal spring to
typical winter. The night of January 25-26 enjoyed transparency deepen
to fully 5th magnitude thruout the City -- with a 1st quarter Moon in
the sky! -- and also a deepened freeze down to -15C.
NYSkiers and other astros had good views of the Moon-Venus
conjunction on January 20th under clear chilly skies. The Moon had
strong earthshine with many landmarks visible on the night side of the
globe.
Comet McNaught was a tough object for the City. A run of clear
nights helped immensely to allow brief views, with bare eye, of the
comet in strong evening twilight. Its rapid southward track soon
carried it both angularly and linearly away from the Sun, causing it
to fade rapidly. By the 20s of January it was out of view from us.
The meteorite that landed in a Freehold NJ house on January 2nd
was exhibited at Rutgers University Geological Museum. The one-day
show, on Saturday the 27th, was mobbed by about a thousand visitors,
including several NYSkiers from New Jersey. The iron-nickel rock is
only the second meteorite found in New Jersey, the first being in
1829. That was before meteorites were recognized as having celestial
origin!

NYSkies
-----
Astronomers are exploiting NYSkies as a quick, handy, friendly, and
potent source of astronomy news relating to the City. And there is
LOTS of astronomy stuff going on around New York! Since it revived on
28 September 2001 (it was interrupted by World Trade Center) NYSkies
became the definitive forum and public record for matters bearing on
home astronomy in and around New York.
Joining NYSkies is easy. Send an empty email to this /Yahoogroup
maillist at '. Its posts are sent to
you in your email and you post to it by email. It's that simple!
Or you may go to 'groups.yahoo.com/group/nysky'. If you are already
signed up with Yahoo, you go and sign in and then 'join' NYSkies. If
not, you have to go thru a silly 'registration' that's a one shot
chore, valid for all groups you may eventually join. The files area of
NYSkies are accessible only thru the website.
