CEV = Project Constellation
Apparently, Sean O'Keefe provided a name during the Jan 28
Senate hearing. NASA has named the Crew Exploration Vehicle effort "Project Constellation", a name with both nautical and astronautical meanings. - Ed Kyle |

Among the Zodiac constellations, they've got the following choices: Gemini - They already used that one Libra - Sorry, no balances and scales in microgravity Aries - If the vehicle accidentally rams the space station Leo - If the vehicle gets hit by a Leonid Cancer - Space radiation experiment Virgo - No experiments planned for sex in space Aquarius - If the vehicle lands in the ocean on return Pisces - See above Capricorn - Ever see the movie Capricorn 1? Taurus - There's plenty of bull already in the Bush plan Sagittarius - Not compatible with inflatable modules Scorpio - Not bad! Some manned vehicle designs look like a scorpion I predict they'll use the last one. -- /\ Greg Kuperberg (UC Davis) / \ \ / Visit the Math ArXiv Front at http://front.math.ucdavis.edu/ \/ * All the math that's fit to e-print * |

Gemini and Apollo crews named their own spacecraft for each mission. A resuable crew module would need a more permanent name. But then, why name them at all? Russia and China do not, to the best of my knowledge, individually name their manned spacecraft beyond the basic "Soyuz M1-10", etc.. - Ed Kyle |

Iain In another message, I incorrectly said that: "Gemini and Apollo crews named their own spacecraft for each mission". I should have said "some" crews named their own spacecraft. Gemini 3 was unofficially "Molly Brown", but the names stopped after that until Apollo 9, when NASA needed a way to differentiate between separated Command and Lunar Modules. The initial "Gumdrop", "Spider", "Snoopy", and "Charlie Brown" eventually gave way to more formal names like "Columbia" and "Eagle". - Ed Kyle |

..... NASA has named the Crew Exploration Vehicle effort "Project Constellation" .... I like it. And it harkins back to the other named efforts involving capsules -- Mercury, Gemini, Apollo -- so I wouldn't be surprised if they go with a capsule (though I can live with a winged vehicle). ----== Posted via Newsfeed.Com - Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeed.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 100,000 Newsgroups ---= 19 East/West-Coast Specialized Servers - Total Privacy via Encryption =--- |
