What if (on Aliens)
What if we tried to imagine what an alien would look like if the alien
came all the way from Andromeda. Not just his body, but his brain. Would he have TOE? Is it possible that such a high plain can never be reached? That no living body can survive such a trip? That we all can travel no further than our solar systems. Well as body goes they must have two eyes,Brain on highest up part of their bodies. Two or four hands. and their heads made to look straight up. They must be as kind and considerate to each other as possible. TreBert |

It wasn't always a white dwarf, and when it went into it's helium flashover is when it lost its grip on any number of planets and proto- moons. An icy Selene as our proto-moon of 8e22 kg would actually make a rather nifty interstellar craft. Imagine having a cozy 100 km layer of ice to protect your frail DNA. ~ BG |

Human creatures are strongly influenced by emotions, such as political affiliations, religion, family ties etc. and subsequently make decisions based upon those handicaps. Now a race of super robots, androids if you will, created by human-like creatures and who learned to replicate and improve themselves and successfully killed off their "creators", would have no such limitations. They can withstand the coldness of space, the lack of any kind of atmosphere, are corrosion resistant, don't require any kind of food, other than the occasional 30 weight shot of oil. They could harbor an affinity towards humans, or they could come to seek revenge for the mistreatment suffered under their creators, who also in all likelihood considered themselves humane and whose emotions were also dictated by make-believe entities such as gods, ethnical and social concepts of superiority and false pride, catering to figments of their fertile imaginations. Yea, I think they would gleefully kill us all, in order to preserve sanity in the Universe. Our present global state of affairs would present them with all the rationale they need. |

I'll have to check old Fred out. But A.I. robotics is not all
that far fetched. I've always maintained that when mankind creates the first realistic artificial woman (with an on-off switch for the vocal chords), we'll become extinct, since no man would put up with the real thing any longer. For instance, a creature with its eyes on its feet would not make much sense for survival. One should never say anything is impossible and so we cannot say for sure that trips between the Milky Way and Andromeda for humans or other intelligent creatures are impossible. There is still too much we do not understand about the universe. But anyone able to survive such a trip would almost have to have a TOE. Robots could more easily withstand the journey, but the inclination might be to simply send them out on a trip that would take them 3 million years. Intelligent humanoid creatures, not having that much time on their hands, would keep looking for the short cut: the wormhole, the FTL technology, or warp drives. Accomplishing the trip FTL, and being able to communicate FTL, would make them much more effective in whatever they were setting out to do. They conquest of the Milky Way by the Andromedans would only be attempted if they had FTL technology. Otherwise, what would be the point? Double-A |

Ever read cities in flight by James Blish?
covers the rest of this thread...and a great story Dave "Saul Levy" wrote in message ... That's the BERSERKERS to a tee, Hagar! lmfjao! Fred Saberhagen beat you to it by many YEARS! Hagar Nice rebuttal. Yes silicone instead of organic matter could fit
better for spacetime and all its hazardous conditions. It does poise the question, can a robot pass the Turing test?? treBert |

About the only way you could even somewhat communicate with it is by putting it in a cage to live while you study it. Of course you would know it's dangerous, unpredictable and have the IQ of a severely retarded modern human. |
