F-1 rocket engine thermal insulation (reflective "batting")

I've posted a bunch of pictures of the external insulation applied to
the F-1 engine on my blog:

The insulation was used on every flight of the Saturn V... and is
virtually never depicted in photos, art, toys or models.

Realspace models makes replacement F-1 engines for the Revell Saturn V

The insulation was made of asbestos, and that's why we don't see any
on display with the insulation. Just as well, as the blankets cover
up lots of interesting details.

I don't recall seeing similar blankets on the SpaceX Merlin engines
used on the Falcon 9 cluster. There are blue blankets of some sort
visible while the equipment is being serviced, but they don't appear
in the firing videos. SpaceX has said that Kevlar 'flak jackets' will
be used to protect the engines in the event one does an unscheduled
disassembly during flight but I couldn't tell from the images if
those are being used during the test firings.

....Correct on both points. The tour bimbos at Space Center Disney
(JSC) used to point this out during the tours about 10-12 years ago,
but the last time Brother Dim and I went on the tour - about a year
ago now, IIRC - all they did was drop us off at the new building and
let the sparse murals inside do their work for them.

b) I *may* have my leg and be up on enough to move around and drive
myself down there. I take it you're planning another one of your
trips?

reunion near Roswell around the second week of July. So if I disappear
for a week, don't anyone panic right off the bat, because I'm not sure
how the wireless access will be out there. Pat knows how to find out
if something's happened, just to make sure we don't have that same
lack of contact as the second time I was in the hospital this year.
That particular DKA attack was infection-induced and not diabetically
caused, which is why it kicked my ass for so damn long before they
figured out what they couldn't understand.

Last time I was out that way, I do know the local cell tower operator tended
to severely restrict data access (my Sprint worked, other phones would make
a voice connection, but any attempts at data were shut down instantly)

But that was 5 years ago.

Now the streetlamps in Roswell were cute.

If you're gonna be here, I can arrange to go there. I haven't been to any of
the pay stuff yet. This time I won't run out of film If you arrive on a
weekend my wife has off, I can make it a weekender. Besides, you owe me a
beer for not showing up the last time I was out your way :P

Just don't mistake me for your brother :P
