Warning: Black Hole Dead Ahead!
"Sam Wormley" wrote in message ... Warning: Black Hole Dead Ahead! http://news.sciencemag.org/scienceno...ead-ahead.html A gas cloud on its way towards the supermassive black hole at the Galactic Centre http://www.nature.com/nature/journal...ture10652.html The cloud's dynamic evolution and radiation in the next few years will probe the properties of the accretion flow and the feeding processes of the supermassive black hole. The kilo-electronvolt X-ray emission of Sgr A* may brighten significantly when the cloud reaches pericentre. There may also be a giant radiation flare several years from now if the cloud breaks up and its fragments feed gas into the central accretion zone. In about 8 months it'll hit they say. I wonder if NASA's new X-ray telescope, NuStar, will get some real pictures of the event? It's designed to image black holes and neutron stars and such. The site says launch is next month. http://www.nustar.caltech.edu/home http://www.scientificamerican.com/ar...lescope-photos |
