If you go to
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/videogallery/index.html and view MSL Spacecraft Mars Bound you see the operation where the spacecraft is given a spin, and then separated from the launcher. What puzzles me is that the launcher appears then to despin. Given that by that time it's space junk, I have to wonder why. Sylvia. |

I figured they had to fire thrusters to get more seperation, and that stopped the spin. I can't really see that would happen exactly to cancel the spin. On searching through various forums, it appears that sometimes they do experiments relating to the Centaur stage after separation, so maybe that's what that was about. Sylvia. |

On searching through various forums, it appears that sometimes they do experiments relating to the Centaur stage after separation, so maybe that's what that was about. Not sure why the decided to stop the spin, but I found this... In this case, the Atlas put Mars Science Lab on a track to miss Mars by 38,000 miles to ensure the Centaur upper stage that is following the spacecraft won't hit the planet. http://www.spaceflightnow.com/atlas/...201noburn.html And this... "A year later, Centaur successfully placed the satellite into transfer orbit after a 25-minute coast, then developed an unplanned-for spin that compromised its communications experiments.21" "To prevent Delta's reflected motor exhaust from damaging Pioneer, Centaur performed a retromaneuver to move it 25 feet from the Delta stage.52" http://history.nasa.gov/SP-4230.pdf The Centaur can control its orientation precisely, which is important for managing the direction of thrust while its engine is firing. It carries its own flight control computer and can release its payload with the desired attitude and spin rate. http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/mission...ehicle/stage2/ Sylvia. |
