Spirit color wheel not being used?
"Beau Webber" wrote in message om... It has been worying me for some time that there appear to be no identical red/green/blue filters for the left and right cameras - how does one get full colour stereo pictures - perhaps interpolation or perhaps it is approximate ? anyone know ? "Three of the filters on the left Pancams were chosen to sample wavelengths close to the R, G, and B response of the human photopic function, so that true color images could be generated of the martian surface scenery using methods similar to those outlined by Maki et al. (1999). The left plus right pairs of red and blue filters also provide multispectral stereo imaging capability, with the red pair optimized for stereo imaging of high contrast Mars scenes, and the blue pair providing an alternative method at a wavelength where topography is hypothesized to provide a larger source of scene contrast variations (e.g., Kirk et al., 1999)." "Two filters, near 440 and 750 nm, are redundant in the left and right Pancams. This provides stereo imaging capability in two colors, as well as redundancy for generating pseudo-true color images in the right Pancam, in the event of a left Pancam failure." Table 4. JPL Mars Image names
mlm writes:
Can anyone shed light on the naming system JPL uses for their raw image filenames? I think I saw it documented somewhere. Probably at the site of the science instruments at the university of the principle investigator. (Sorry, I've forgotten which. Cornell?) Maybe at the JPL site. |

JPL Mars Image names (was Spirit color wheel not being used?)
Can anyone shed light on the naming system JPL uses for their raw image filenames? This is what I have figured out on my own: Eg: 2 P 126553081 ESF 0200 P 2100 L6 M1 .JPG 2 = MER-2 (Spirit aka MER-A) 2 = MER-A 1 = MER-B P = Pancam N=Navcam F=F hazcam R=R hazcam 9-digit decimal number = seconds since Jan 1, 2000 so: '126553081' would be 4-Jan-04 17:36. (4 hours slow though ??) ESF/EFF/EDS = ? -- I note EFF is the predominant type; files are larger Compression quality and size: EFF - 'best' quality EDN - 'medium' ESF - 'thumbnail' 4-digit decimal number = ? ('0200' in this case) P = ? Looks like all are P, except views of the Sun with pancam (F), and EDL (also F). 4-digit decimal number = ? ('2100' in this case) I suspect something about quality and size of the image. L = Left 'eye' 6 = Filter number 6 M1 = ? (I don't think Mer-1, as that is Opportunity) Thanks for any insight. Mark PS Thanks v. much Joe for filter information. JD |
