EXPEDITION 7 CREW TALKS WITH NASA EXPLORER SCHOOLS EDUCATORS

Cosmonaut and International Space Station Expedition 7
Commander Yuri Malenchenko and NASA astronaut, Space Station
Science Officer, Ed Lu will chat with educators at the
Kennedy Space Center (KSC) participating in NASA's Explorer
Schools Program. The special Space Station downlink session
is July 22 from 10:45 to 11:05 a.m. EDT.

Five NASA Explorer Schools teams participating: Carol City
Elementary School, Opa Locka, Fla.; Oscar Patterson
Elementary School, Panama City, Fla.; Howard W. Bishop
Middle School, Gainesville, Fla.; Stewart Magnet Middle
School, Tampa, Fla.; and R. S. Bunche Middle School,

in a variety of hands-on activities in a week-long workshop
at KSC July 19-26.

The NASA Explorer Schools Program, launched on June 30, is a
new agency education initiative in collaboration with the
National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). The program
establishes a three-year partnership between the agency and
50 NASA Explorer Schools teams, consisting of teachers and
education administrators from diverse communities throughout
the country. The goal of the program is to increase student
interest in science, math, and technology and enhance their
knowledge of careers in those areas.

The International Space Station program, provided by NASA,
is one in a series of downlinks to educational organizations
across the country and abroad, and an integral component of
NASA's Teaching from Space Program.

The Teaching from Space Program, managed from the Johnson
Space Center, Houston, creates educational opportunities
using the unique environment of human space flight. The
program builds partnerships with education communities to
create unique learning opportunities through the use of NASA
research and education technology.

Media interested in observing the downlink and speaking with
Explorer Schools team members at KSC should contact: Tracy
Young, 321/867-2468.

The downlink will be broadcast live on NASA TV, available
via satellite through AMC-9, transponder 9C, located at 85
degrees west longitude, vertical polarization, with a
