Laser communications may result in live HD video from Mars
http://www.gizmag.com/nasa-laser-communications-relay-
demonstration/19946/ Another revolution could take place in interplanetary probe SIZE since the transmission power needed for high data rate communications is irrespective of size. This means that a small spacecraft with correspondingly small solar panels simply would not be able to generate the power needed for high speed data transmission. If laser based communication terminals are used we might see dimunitive-sized spacecraft send to Mars with a huge cost savings since laser transmission uses comparatively little power. I'm really looking forward to seeing live full HD video from a Mars probe or even Jupiter! |
