Largely because the electric chair was a much flashier way to kill
them.

However, your statement is incorrect. First, the US doesn't set the
method of capital punishment; the various states do. Second, there
are still states where hanging is one of the approved methods.

1) The US doesn't determine how the death penalty is executed; that is
a State decision.

2) There are still states where hanging is one of the methods
employed.

3) We change lots of things for reasons other than whether or not it
is 'civilized'. In this case, hanging went out in a lot of places
because there was a big push from the electricity interests to switch
to the electric chair (a much less civilized method of extinguishing
them).

Hanging is still one of several methods of execution in Delaware, New
Hampshire, and Washington. Note that there are still a couple that
offer firing squad as an alternative, too.
