CNN - Cat and Binos - Hurry
Lead story picture has solder looking thru binos next to a cat. Is it
Mak or SCT? Doubtful he's going for Mars low on the horizon. |

Looks like an SCT. Rod, do you know if it's Celeston that supplies the armed forces? Tom T. I couldn't catch the photo. It must have changed in the time since you
posted the message. I do know that Questar has a GSA contract with the government for a 3.5" field telescope. http://www.questar-corp.com/fieldranger.htm Could that be what you saw? |

Likely the proverbial $500 toilet seat of telescopes :-)

Couldn't find the photo but I remember reading somewhere last year that the
military purchased quit a number of C5s. I believe a lot of the hummers and armored personal carriers have them. Well, they SHOULD! :-) Peace, Rod Mollise Author of _Choosing and Using a Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope_ Like SCTs and MCTs? Check-out sct-user, the mailing list for CAT fanciers! I'd go with the "damaged" idea. Also, a half bino can peer
through a small opening, maintaining concealment. "Brian Sturges" wrote in message ... I could'nt get past wondering why the solder was using the binos with one objective cap still on. Binos damaged in combat? One-eyed solder? The scope did look like a standard black-tube Celestron. Michael Wood wrote in message ... Lead story picture has solder looking thru binos next to a cat. A number of years ago before I got into astronomy I was in an Army unit that
had Celestron SCT's. If I had to guess now what size they were, I'd say 11". Could have been 8". They seemed large to me at the time. Our scout teams used them for spotting the enemy. They also had CCD imagers & thermal optics which were cool to play around with. I remember a couple of guys saying how cool it was to look at Haley's Comet with the SCT's. I only got to see it naked eye unfornately. In my unit now, I take the younger guys out to star gaze with night vision goggles. It's a great alternative purpose for Uncle Sam's gear.
