if speed to retrieve webb isnt important then a ion engine could be a way to move webb back to earth for service perhaps near ISS....

it would of been far better to have built it with a SM for return to earth if it has tech troubles.... sure that would of added complexity, but it would be sad to send so much money and find it never worked or fails quickly..

ideally a reusable space tug gets built to facilitate service on a whole manner of space equiptement

space tug plans go back before skylab and were to be used to move it to a higher orbit.

sadly shuttle sucked up all the money some of which would of funded a tug, and a second skylab to orbit. the pace qualified 2nd skylab was cut apart to be used at the NASM.

currently there are proposals by a private company to build tugs to relocate satellites stuck in wrong orbit, out of fuel....

one proposal even includes a robotic service craft that could refuel sats not designed for in orbit servce
