Chances are small Rodney, but no-one knows the full history of Mars... This is the sort of short story Larry Niven could do well: Expedition gets to Mars mid-21st century ready to bash rocks, look for micro- fossils. It does so, but also finds finds odd isotope signatures in the soil, locates a cave in the side of a cliff that's the exposed end of an ancient tunnel... Actually, he did write something like it, I forget the name of the story. Expedition gets to Mars, finds an abandoned alien base with a gravity-wave beacon that uses a mini black hole in the transmitter, turns off the black hole holder thingy. With bad consequence for Mars. |

What are the chances that mars was a blue planet hundreds of thousands of years ago with a thriving advanced civilization. It was a blue plane a long time ago, that's for sure. As for advanced civilization, I don't know. As for a civilization (including space faring civilization) at all, possible. But they became so radio and laser noisey that some aliens from another part of the galaxy came by and blasted them to oblivion with planet killer weapons. I don't the chances are, but if a planet do somehow manage to disturb one planet too far, they got to face the consequences. Maybe it was because Mars become too insulting. Maybe they said something like "Gorgon (or what the planet name is) is a dump!", "Gorgonians are a bunch of (expletives insert here)!", and so on. So much insults that someone decided to silence Mars. Of course, if someone then said that you couldn't hurt people because they said hurtful things, it will probably be answered with "Who got the planet killer weapons here?" "Rick Thomas" wrote in message ... I don't think their whole civilization got destroyed. The whole race moved under the surface of the planet into catacombs and they are still thriving there. Possible. |

What are the chances that, even if they were just plain noisy, their total wattage was at all of any practical consequence to civilisations at interstellar distances? -Mark Martin |
