whcih star atlas to buy
Ok guys,
i am set on purchasing the star atlas 2000 but undecided on which version. I like the deluxe for the color format and to do the research during the day but cannot take it out at night due to the dew and changes in color looking at it with a red led. Then i noticed the star atlas 2000 field in spiral bound. I dont think i could use that during the day for research but it looks great to use in the field at night. Am i correct in this? These things are just so expensive. What have you guys done in matters like this? john |

I use the Deluxe color edition (spiral bound) in the field a lot of the time, as the object lables still show up OK under a red flashlight. I keep mine either closed or in the hatchback of my minivan, so dew is not a problem. There are laminated "full-spread" editions of the atlas also available. I like the black stars and lables on a white background, as they tend to be a little easier for me to read under low light levels. Clear skies to you. -- David W. I agree with David on this one. I got the black background with white stars
(Field Version) and I find that it is really hard to see in the dark. I would have prefered the white background with the black stars. "David Knisely" wrote in message ... Hi there. Dale Nowadays I mostly use custom printouts from the freeware Sky Charts (down to mag 12) I find the black on white with a red torch no problem, especially with the convenience of marking and annotating the reprintable maps. I also have the desk and field editions of Skalnate Pleso maps from back in the 70s (which inspired Tiron's Sky Atlas 2000) and ended up using the desk edition most often. Also have the Deluxe Color version of Sky Atlas 2000. But rarely goes outside mainly because the fold-out maps are cumbersome to manage and I did not like annotating it because it spoiled the lovely colorful look. The colour edition is my coffee-table version that I like browsing indoors. Note that the more expensive Unanometria and Millenium atlases are "desk editions" only. Again that would be for the convenience for marking and annotation on the maps. So I'd go for the desk edition and get the field or colour edition as a treat later. Martin |
