NYC EVENTS FOR AUGUST 2006
------------------------
John Pazmino
NYSkies

[part 1 of 2]

The following astronomy activities in the commuting ring enclosing
New York City are operated by various organizations. A few cultural
items of special importance to City astronomers may be included.
Altho NYC Events confirms the listed items, they are subject to
change by their sponsors. Check with their contacts. Let the sponsor
of an event you attend know that you learned of its event thru NYC
Events.
You may ask for the next NYC Events thru the NYSkies email
address, above, if you're not yet in the forum.
For events which missed NYC Events, check the NYSkies Yahoogroup
forum. Join NYSkies by sending email to 'nysky-subscribe @
yahoogroups.com'.
All hours are Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

Proximity of Mars
---------------
The story circulated for the real Mars proximity of August 2003 is
coming around again. The year and day are left out of the text, os the
story looks on the level to the untutored reader. How to show there is
NO close approach of Mars this year? Fire up your planetarium program
and see where Mars really is in August 2006. Mars is just about as FAR
away as possible, near superior conjunction.
Some regular stargazing sessions are slated for the weekend of
August 25-27. They are at times billed as Mars watches! You'll have
good stargazing, in clear dark sky, but there will be NO Mars.

Perseid meteor shower
-------------------
August 11-13 is the annual Perseid meteor weekend. Usually there
is a good display of shooting stars but only in the owl hours thru
dawn. Some regular starviewings for this weekend, in evening, may be
extended into the following morning for a Perseid watch. Ask at your
local astronomy center. Mind, too, the shifft in weather from day to
night that can kill your enthusiasm for outdoor astronomy.

General News
----------
Welcome aboard, PicNic cafe'! This eatery in Bloomingdale MH,
features Cafe' Science, an evening supper and discussion with a
Columbia U science professor. Yes, the meal is on you, but the science
is on the house.
New York City Chapter of National Space Society returns to its
normal meeting site, NYU's SIlver Ctr; it was temporarily moved to a
rooms in Tisch Hall for May-July.
Many astronomy clubs are in recess for the summer, but they crank
up activity in September or October. Keep in touch with them thru
their contacts.
Summer, when most astronomy actibity is low, it's the time to
review club websites and litterature. Check for expired notices, out-
of-date calendars, ambiguous event specs, fiddly web operations. For
presenting your meeting schedule, nothing, but nothing, beats a flat-
out list of dates and days. This should be out there regardless of any
'rule' your club goes by for setting meeting dates.

Event news
--------
The NYSkies Astronomy Seminar continued its twice-monthly
discussions of astronomy news, with a lively and stable attendance.
The session on July 20th featured Dr Ed Belbruno on 'Fly me to the
Moon'. He described the various traditional and innovative
trajectories for lunar space flights. The audience of about 25 engaged
him in electric !&A afterwards.
National Night Out seems more advertised this year than formerly.
It's intended to bring neighbors outside to acquaint among themselfs.
To encourage this, oputdoor lights should be turned on to illuminate
paths and foors. This occasion could be the one to start teaching
peole about luminous graffiti and offer them starviewings.
Governors Island, in addition to being a refreshing spot for
relaxing and sightseeing, now has Saturday afternoon lectures! They
are included in the FREE ferry ride to the Island. After the talk,
stop at the new Exhibition Hall for talks and demos on NYC history and
science.
With the torrid days of July, Governors Island was thronged with
visitors. A large segment was the lunchtime flock from Lower
Manhattan. An other large slice is the after-work stream, cooling off
in the ocean breeze before heading home. The Island to these folk is
now just an extension of Battery Park.
Appreciate that the ferries have only about 200 seats, being
merely the old Coast Guard boats pressed into visitor service. From
time to time, people were held back to the next boat because of the
crowds.
Pack a picnic from eateries near South Ferry, there being no food
service on the island. Wear summer clothes, walking shoes, hat. See
details for each Saturday
Two starparties run in Massachusetts in August. Arunah Hill Says
is on the 25-27; Conjunction, 18-20. They offer camping, stargazing,
and other traditional starpaty features.
'New trends in astrodynamics' is an academic conference of keen
interest to spacefaring fans. Many papers relate to space travel
innovations. At Princeton University, august 16-18, it is a bit
pricey, $350. The fee includes some meals, cinema show, and evening
receptions.
NYC Urban Park Rangers sustains a vigorous scheme of cultural --
and some science! -- events in the City parks. I've been including
many of them to enhance your appreciation of the City and development
into a more wisely and worldly astronomer. Please note that this
month's events in Central Park meet at various hours and places.
With the nighttime stargazing sessions in full operation, please
understand that weather at night can be much cooler and windier than
by day. As silly as it may seem under daytime scorching Sun, bring a
sweater with you.
In addition, there can be sudden intense thunderstorms in late
afternoon. While they end at or near sunset and then may give way to a
clear sky, the ground and furniture may still be wet for the
stargazing. This is specially true in a field with no shelter.

Sky News
------
We generally lost the second chance at seeing the Stonehenge
sunset in early July. Rain, clouds, haze obscured the setting Sun for
just about everyone in the NYSkies territory.
Over all, rain, cloud, haze smothered starviewings thruout the
NYSkies turf. Only dim views were secured of th brighter stars now ans
then. Even on the clearer nights, the temperature and hmidity made for
very sticky conditions, with frequent dashes into air-condition.
In the southwest is Jupiter with Oval BA, the new junior red spot.
In late May to early June it began to creep toward the Great Red Spot.
Oval BA, also called Red Spot Junior, corssed Great Red Spot during
July 4-28. The little spot indexed south in latitude to bypass the big
one with good clearance between them. There was no obvious influence
on each other.

Astronomers are exploiting NYSkies as a quick, handy, friendly,
and potent source of astronomy news relating to the City. And there is
LOTS of astronomy stuff going on around New York! Since it revived on
28 September 2001 (it was interrupted by World Trade Center) NYSkies
became the definitive forum and public record for matters bearing on
home astronomy in and around New York.
Joining NYSkies is easy. Send an empty email to this Yahoogroup
maillist at '. Its posts are sent to
you in your email and you post to it by email. It's that simple!
Or you may go to 'groups.yahoo.com/group/nysky'. If you are
already signed up with Yahoo, you go and sign in and then 'join'
NYSkies. If not, you have to go thru a silly 'registration' that's a
one shot chore, valid for all groups you may eventually join. The
files area of NYSkies are accessible only thru the website.
