It's up to each sponsor whether to continue their outdoor sessions thru the winter. Please, do mind your winter clothing! Bring extra wraps, gloves, socks, hat. I combined the South Ferry and Cortlandt St entries into a new Lower Manhattan item. The conniptions in Lower Manhattan with station closings and train reroutes is too varied week-by-week. Study posted notices at stations and listen for voice instructions on trains and stations. Lower Manhattan is a compact district. You could pass up on convoluted excursions and transfers by walking to your destination from which ever station is alive during your ride. The Urban Park Rangers continue their excellent free tours and talks in and around the parks. Dress for breeze and chill for the outdoor events. Most of these are cultural events, in line with my program of enhancing the cosmic perspective of the City astronomer. November may be a good time to consider your event schedule for 2006. If possible, line up dates and places for your website before the yearend holidays. I realize that you may be boxed in by school semester crossing, renewal of room arrangements, change of crew within your club. I can only ask, please give it the good ol' college try. For YOUR members and readers. In answer to a couple inquiries, a phrase in all-caps in an item is an explanatory note, not the event title. Titles are in ticks within the event description. You may freely pass along NYC Events. If you like, you may trim it to better suit your readers's interests, like removing remote events or those charging a fee. Just note that your version is somehow abbreved and that the complete issue is available from NYSkies. Event news -------- October opened with the annual open house at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and the 70th anniversary party at Hayden Planetarium, These occurred in mild weather. The rest of October, right up to the end, was on the whole rainy or cloudy. Rain swamped just about everything outdoors on the weekend of the 8-9, including most of the annual Open House New York tours. The rain eased up on the next weekend in the NYSkies territory. The air dried out in mid New Jersey on Friday the 14th, in the City by Saturday, and in New England by Sunday. The clearing sky missed the American Association of Variable Star Observers meeting. From Thursday the 13th thru the closing night on the 15th Massachusetts was wet, wet, wet. Only on Sunday the 16th, when we were on the way home, did the Sun shine and air dry out. At AAVSO I promote New York astronomy and NYSkies. This time I spoke on 'Station at the center of the universe' about the astronomy features built into Grand Central terminal. NYSkiers heard this same talk at the NYSkies Astronomy Seminar on October 20th. Saturday the 29th was informally 'Space saturation day'. The exhibit of aerospace models at the Pratt gallery. running since October 7th, was the first activity. Then followed book shopping in Greenwich Village, lunch, a joint meeting of National Space Society and Mars Society of New York, supper, and a planned Mars watch in Chelsea. This last was called off for clouds, but was successfully held on the next night under clear calm, mild skies. Amateur Astronomer Association Inc sticks to its despotic ways, elaborated in the companion article 'AAA news'. Thus, certain of its activities carry the risk of abuse and hostility, as marked in the Continued in next message. --- þ RoseReader 2.52á P005004 ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Unrestricted-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 120,000+ Newsgroups ----= East and West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =---- |

index and annotated in the listings. November opens with the Custer Jamboree, November 4-6, a conference and starparty combo on the north fluke of Long Island. On the Custer site is the Amateur Observers Society's own new observatory, open for use during the Jamboree. Continuing thru November is 'Aerospace design' based on wind tunnel models from NASA and other agencies at the Pratt manhattan gallery. It's free at 144 West 14th St, near 7th Av. The exhibit also features a talk on engineering and art on the 17th. November 23rd starts a month-long season of discount fares on New York area transit! These include half-fare on subways and buses, free 10-trip rides on Long Island railroad and MetroNorth, and a 40-day, not the regular 30-day, MetroCard. Details are still being worked out, so pay attention to announcements in the news media. Also on the 23rd the Union Sq holiday book market opens. Dozens of booths and tents from book dealers all over the City and beyond ring the Square. Hop from one to the next, thru December 24th, to harvest those astronomy books you always wished to have. At the very least, you'll collect contacts to later visit the stores themselfs. A history-making journey begins on the 24th, which is a tentative date, when the schooner 'Anne' will try to stay at sea without landing for 1,000 days! The plan is to be entirely self-sustaining, living off nature. 'Anne' sails from Chelsea Piers with a free sendoff show. You'll welcome her back in mid 2008. Sky News ------ There was little skywatching in October due to the almost continuous rain and cloud. The weather was a mix of residual hurricane and normal autumn rain. In fact, October 2005 was the 2nd wettest month in City history, with 421mm of rain! The all-time record is 428mm for September 1882. On the isolated clearish nights, Venus and Mars dominated the stargazing efforts. Proximity of Mars was on the 29th, which was a bit too cloudy to observe. On the 30th a Mars watch was held at Stew Rorer's rooftop with pleasing views of the planet thru his C-11 scope. Peter Tagatac and his group, who meet occasionally in Central Park as noted under 'XX Nov', reports that on the 30th stars of 4-1/2 to 5th magnitude were discernible in the zenith -- from the Park! During that afternoon his team showed Venus to Park visitors -- by naked eye! We lose Venus in November as she rides a shallow ecliptic in the southwest. In December the ecliptic tilts up, bringing her above the skyline for a last show before racing toward inferior conjunction in early 2006. Mars is in easy view by nightfall in November, with opposition on the 7th. He's well up by late evening, THE good and bright orange star in Aries. By end of October the south polar cap contracted to a nitid white dot and a dust storm was creeping over the equator and south parts of the globe. The Observer's Handbook arrived at NYSkies on October 20th. The cost is only $17, including pack and post. NYSkiers can pick up their copies at our Seminars or other astro and space events around New York, or just let me mail the book to you. Do use the coupon posted in NYSkies on the 21st. Our allotment in years past sold out by mid December, so please get your request in now, like tomorrow morning, to avoid gross disappointment.. City news ------- This section, as explained for September, is discontinued. It is now a separate article 'AAA news'. NYSkies ----- Astronomers are exploiting NYSkies as a quick, handy, friendly, and potent source of astronomy news relating to the City. And there is LOTS of astronomy stuff going on around New York! Since it revived on 28 September 2001 (it was interrupted by World Trade Center) NYSkies became the definitive forum and public record for matters bearing on home astronomy in and around New York. Joining NYSkies is easy. Send an empty email to this Yahoogroup maillist at '. Its posts are sent to you in your email and you post to it by email. It's that simple! Or you may go to 'groups.yahoo.com/group/nysky'. If you are already signed up with Yahoo, you go and sign in and then 'join' NYSkies. If not, you have to go thru a silly 'registration' that's a one shot chore, valid for all groups you may eventually join. The files area of NYSkies are accessible only thru the website.
