Default Did Variable-Light-Speed Cosmology Originate With Hawking's Idea?

In about 1989 Hawking suggested that, at very early cosmic epochs, the
position of a photon would be perforce more-and-more determined --
smaller and smaller Universe. Therefore its velocity would become
more-and-more uncertain -- apparently conterminous with it tending in
practice toward infinity. (My source: Kitty Ferguson's biography of
Hawking)

Was this the inspiration for Moffat's (1993) and Maguejo's (a few years
later) VSL theories -- designed to solve various cosmological problems
-- communication, etc -- in the very early Universe??

According to Magueijo, it wasn't.

Does this just drop on you from on high, or do you have more details or
a reference?

Read Magueijo's "Faster than the speed of light"

I read the mother****er, but I don't remember any such wank statement.

Blimey!

Well, Magueijo never credits Hawking with it, this is what I was
talking about.

Magueijo describes in his book how the idea struck him one damp
Cambridge morn.

OK, perhaps it's just coincidence that he was at the same place -- the
Institute of Theoretical Physics -- as Hawking. But he would probably
have come across Hawking's "inflationary" ideas during the course of
his musings.
