Fred Whipple deceased
Fred Whipple, of the "dirty iceball" comet theory, passed away Monday
(2004.08.30) at age 97. Whipple was also the the inventor the space debris protection system known as the Whipple Shield. But what a bad example: still bicycling to the office at 92, years after retirement! Must be the comet thing - Jan Oort's wife made him stop pedalling to work in his early 80s... although he could still sit at a lecture with double hearing aids on each side, look utterly drowsy, then pop up with the one question that would most thoroughly skewer the speaker.
