Default Mercator and Frisius

The Google frontpage tells us that Mercator was born 503 years ago today and his instructor was Gemma Frisius who first proposed carrying a clock on a voyage to determination geographical differences using time differences. These men were geometers and their lavish works can be appreciated even without an understanding of Latin -

The Copernican insight had yet to take hold (page 5) even a decade after that work was written yet the confluence of timekeeping and the proofs for the motions of the Earth still plague our era even though it is mostly unnecessary.

I have brought to this forum the understanding how the 'average' 24 hour day substitutes for 'constant' rotation at a rate of 15 degrees per hour using the neat trick ,as an analogy, where the average flow of water through a pipe is roughly the same as a constant water through the same pipe. The facility which reduces the variations in the length of each noon cycle to a 24 hour average is derived from a step-by-step approach to timekeeping and external references.

Fame at last!

Any Google search for "bull****ter" now brings up a mention of 1461!
On page 1461, no less! Y'all couldn't make it up! spit

It is worth noting that there are thugs out there intent on destroying an entire heritage and obliterating any trace of the origins which link timekeeping to planetary dynamics just as there are thugs out there who are intent in bulldozing an ancient city into the ground -

People like Frisius and Mercator contributed to the system of reckoning which eventually emerged with the invention of accurate watches with Frisius the first to describe how time differences transfer into distance differences otherwise known as the Lat/Long system. It is every bit as much a part of the astronomical heritage as stargazing and every bit as enjoyable or important -

Fitting the whole thing together is a 21st century pursuit and should draw people who can express the system as a complete narrative whether in general terms or in detailed form.

So what if these guys come here and deface a thread, after all, such is the nature of an unmoderated forum and long may it live. People who love what they do are bigger than those who can't be inspired or inspiring.
