Especially with the advent of Web publishing (merely a 20th-century advance), one could have the straightforward review in the printed magazine, but have the optical details on-line. Unless they cannot afford to perform the tests (which seems odd to me, but possible), that kind of arrangement would appear to address the negatives associated with bench testing the telescopes reviewed in magazines. Orion's asserted results of 1/3.4-wave P-V and 1/17-wave RMS are kind of odd. That high a ratio--five to one--sounds like a small but deep zone. If it were at all backed up by the other tests, I'd have suggested searching for that zone, but apparently it wasn't. -- Brian Tung (posting from Google Groups) The Astronomy Corner at http://www.astronomycorner.net/ Unofficial C5+ Page at http://www.astronomycorner.net/c5plus/ My PleiadAtlas Page at http://www.astronomycorner.net/pleiadatlas/ My Own Personal FAQ at http://www.astronomycorner.net/reference/faq.html |

A sensible review. I remember David being one of the sensible and
observationally experienced posters here a few years back. It's nice to know somebody is being more productive than hanging around here and arguing with bloody-minded trolls. I didn't much like the very wide page format of the review. It felt rather like walking a tightrope once one launched oneself onto line of text. I worried whether I'd ever reach the far end before falling off onto a lower line like some cartoon character. :-) |
