Default Hubble's replacement - JWST woes

http://www.space.com/astronotes/astronotes.html

The JWST was headed for a 2011 liftoff. However, project costs have
ballooned and now far exceed the program budget. The project is now
price tagged at $3.5 billion. These increases come from a combination of
additional required work, schedule slip, the delay in a firm decision to
accept the Ariane 5 launch vehicle offered by the European Space Agency,
and increased reserves to meet NASA standards.

Does anyone REALLY believe that there will be a replacement for the
Hubble telescope, or for the shuttle?

One of the core tenants of "intelligent design" is that there is nothing
out there of value.

The game is to cut real costs now and promise replacements for the
future. Some one else will be responsible for the future promises.

I believe it will happen - unless it goes way out over budget!

Rather late than never.

Not me man. I didn't vote for any neofasc...um neoCons.

Well there was Gale Norton for Colorado attorney general, but that was a
long time ago and I was young and stupid.

That's an inaccurate characterization. I recommend you read "Brother
Astronomer" by Guy Consolmagno. Real person, real core tenants, great book.

Brother Guy has also done some nice stuff on cosmology. His series may
be downloaded from the BBC Radio 4 web site.

There is an ominous bit of news from the Church of Rome, however. In a
July 7 Op-Ed piece in the NYT, Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, who is
said to be close to the Pope, wrote "Evolution in the sense of common
ancestry might be true, but evolution in the neo-Darwinian sense - an
unguided, unplanned process of random variation and natural selection -
is not. Any system of thought that denies or seeks to explain away the
overwhelming evidence for design in biology is ideology, not science."

More worrisome, however, is the the recent call from the President of
the United States for Christian fundamentalist doctrine to be taught in
the public schools in direct contravention of the Constitution.

My view is that the far right -- which has powerful allies in
Washington -- sees the Constitution as nothing but an obstacle to the
achievement of its aims, and so seeks to destroy it.

P.S. A /tenant/ is someone who rents a property from a landlord. A
/tenet/ is a philosophical or religious belief.

I haven't read this book yet, but I just wanted to point out that upon
first reading this post, I was momentarily befuddled by the term "core
tenants" (which I later saw was copied from grumpa's post). Tenants of
the Catholic core housing? I wondered.

Of course, I did figure out what was meant. But it did give me pause.

I was going to put "core tenants" in quotes but decided not to. Had I
thought of you while preparing the post I would have.

As "Shawn" said --- "NEOFASC". I don't need any instructions from
someone who accepts the premise of Creationism.
