Default Beagle 2 assistance

Prof Colin Pillinger announced in a press conference this morning that
the Beagle 2 team are hoping to receive offers of assistance from any
radio telescope capable of receiving from Mars on a frequency of
401.56Mhz.

The hope is to extend the observations window in an attempt to
establish contact with Beagle 2 - the British Mars Lander.

The website for the Beagle team is www.beagle2.com

I am not connected with the team - just trying to spread the word...

Isn't this a joint European effort?

According to my contacts at Westerbork telescope, The Netherlands, the
frequency may be slightly off because of temperatures on Mars. Therefore,
the frequency band 400.1 to 408.1 MHz will be scanned. Any help from other
radio telescopes, especially the ones in the Australasian region, is
appreciated.

Not the lander hardware; the mission was since the lander piggybacked on
the European Mars Express orbiter, which took care of all the
maneuvering to put Beagle on course for Mars (and the subsequent
maneuvering to put itself into orbit around Mars). Mars Express is also
designed to relay signals to and from Beagle. Also, the Russians sold
the launcher and launch services which sent the probes on their way, so
the European mission to Mars left from the steppes of Asia, in
Kazakstan.

Mars Express is a joint European effort. Beagle 2 is a British lander.

The whole Mars Express mission is shared, yes - but Beagle is entirely
Briitish (and entirely non-governmental at that).

A privatised space mission - this explains a lot.

Most likely "the wrong kind of atmosphere" on Mars (or leaves on the
track).

Apart from some "minor" fundings from ESA it seems...
