North American Nebula from great northwest Texas RV Site
Last week some friends of mine had a get together at a great RV park in north west Texas about an hour south of Amarillo (about 5 miles south of a small town called Quitaque). The lady who runs the RV (Delores) has the ability to swith all lights off and it's truly dark there (astronomer friendly). No significant light domes. It's about 3300 ft high and and very dry. Here is an image I took last week from the http://capella.haela.com/NANSSP.jpg Here's her website: http://capella.haela.com/RanchCountr...hCountryRV.htm take care, Rockett Crawford |

Rockett, About 3 miles north of Quitaque is Caprock Canyons State Park. It has RV hook-ups, showers, rest rooms, bike trails and some of the most beautiful canyon scenery in the southwest. The Amarillo and Lubbock astronomy clubs go there for star parties. John Dobson was there with the Ft Worth Sidewalk Astronomers two years ago. At 88 he climbed Eagle Peak ,no small feat. We use the Little Red campground which has no lights or electricity but a nice paved area for setting up telescopes. Rumor has it as the second choice behind Ft Davis the location for the McDonald Observatory. Don wrote in message ... I've been to Caprock Canyon many times and imaged from their RV slots and it's also a great place to go. One of the things I like about Delores' Ranch is that you can have electricity and water hookups and there are no trees or structures obstructing the view. It's clear all the way around from horizon to horizon 360 degrees. At Delores' you can still go to Caprock Canyon during the day and see the cliffs and enjoy their other features for a small entrance fee. We chose her Ranch for our star party because she was willing to let us reserve it exclusively and just we really like Delores a lot. Last year a friend of mine and I were referred to her by Caprock Canyon because they were filled up. At the time she had no way to turn her security light off. We still had a great time imaging (behind my friend's motor home away from the light) and we liked how wide open her RV slots were to the sky. We mentioned to her that her ranch would be a perfect place to hold star parties if not for her security lights and one month later she had a switch installed to turn them off. take care, Rockett Don wrote in message ... Rockett, Sound like a great place. Do you come out often? Next time you are out this way give me a heads up. Some of us from Lubbock would like to join you in observing at the Delores ranch.
